What Does a Blue Flag Beach Mean?

The “Blue Flag” is an international quality award given to beaches and marinas that meet environmental standards since 1987. The program is managed globally by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) and in Türkiye by the Turkish Environmental Education Foundation (TÜRÇEV). To receive a Blue Flag, a beach or marina must be inspected annually and meet specific criteria. Some of these criteria include:

  • Water Quality: Swimming water quality must be excellent. Clear seawater alone is not sufficient; water analysis results must comply with the EU Bathing Water Directive standards.
  • Environmental Management: This includes a range of criteria such as regular beach cleaning, sufficient waste and recycling bins, hygienic restrooms, wastewater treatment systems, and the protection of sensitive natural areas (such as dunes, wetlands, and loggerhead sea turtle nesting sites).
  • Environmental Education: Beaches must feature information boards about water quality, Blue Flag criteria, and the local ecosystem, and organize at least five environmental education activities.
  • Safety: A Blue Flag beach means a safe swimming environment. It must provide lifeguards, safety equipment, first aid equipment and response plans, emergency plans, and accessibility arrangements for people with disabilities.

Antalya’s Blue Flag Beaches and Marinas

Along with the Aegean region’s Blue Flag beaches, Antalya is one of Türkiye’s richest destinations in terms of Blue Flag beaches and marinas. When the stunning beauty of turquoise waters and golden sands is combined with Blue Flag standards, a seaside holiday becomes an unforgettable experience. Blue Flag beaches and marinas that meet international environmental and safety criteria undergo regular inspections and are re-evaluated every year.

Konyaaltı Beach (Antalya City Center)

One of Antalya’s best-known Blue Flag beaches, Konyaaltı Beach stands out with its clean sea, long shoreline, and convenient location close to the city center. The beach areas operated by the Metropolitan Municipality offer services such as lifeguards, showers, and restrooms. Under the Blue Flag criteria, the quality of the swimming water is regularly tested.

Lara Beach (Muratpaşa – Kundu)

A wide stretch of fine sandy beach and shallow, crystal-clear turquoise waters… Lara Beach is one of the best places to swim in Antalya. Its fine sand and shallow sea make it especially suitable for families. The public beach and Blue Flag hotels in the area are regularly inspected in accordance with the award criteria.

Kundu Public Beach (Aksu)

Located beyond the resort hotel district, Kundu Public Beach offers a comfortable beach experience with its sandy shoreline and calm waters. Its deep blue sea and spacious areas provide the perfect setting for enjoying the beach throughout the day.

Side Public Beach (Manavgat)

With its shallow and calm sea, Side Public Beach offers excellent conditions for swimming all day long, while its proximity to the ancient city of Side allows visitors to combine a beach day with a unique historical atmosphere.

Kumköy Beach (Manavgat-Side)

Stretching along the western side of Side, Kumköy Beach features a long coastline of fine sand. Its peaceful sea makes it one of Antalya’s most popular Blue Flag beaches. It also offers breathtaking sunset views that will captivate photography enthusiasts.

Setur Antalya Marina (Kaleiçi – Antalya City Center)

Located in the historic Kaleiçi Yacht Harbor, Setur Antalya Marina is within walking distance of the city center. In addition to yacht mooring services, it meets Blue Flag environmental management standards with facilities such as waste collection systems, bilge water disposal, and waste oil collection infrastructure.

Alanya Marina (Alanya)

Located a little farther from Antalya city center, Alanya Marina is one of the most important stops along Mediterranean yachting routes. It offers modern mooring capacity, technical service areas, and environmentally friendly waste management facilities.
